1998 mercury grand marquis review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Chrysler corporation gave up on rear-wheel-drive passenger cars years ago, and 1996 was the last year in which general motors made any large sedans with rear-wheel drive (the cadillac brougham and the chevrolet caprice were canceled after that). That leaves the ford crown victoria for the police forces, daily rental and taxicab companies, and the mercury grand marquis for the rest of us.  the grand marquis has posted strong sales gains over the past few years. Mercury officials credit changing american demographics - more older couples who have children or parents living with them, for instance - and the car's solid value, an important factor for those on fixed incomes. Owner loyalty, which speaks volumes, is more than 42 percent, the highest in this part of the market. Grand marquis competes against oldsmobile delta 88, pontiac bonneville and buick lesabre as well as chrysler concorde and toyota avalon. walkaroundthe so-called panther platform on which the ford crown victoria and mercury grand marquis are built, along with the lincoln town car, has been around since 1990. After seven years on cruise control, ford motor company has given the panther cars a substantial number of upgrades for the 1998 model year.  the grand marquis has been restyled with a more vertical grille treatment, a different grille texture, jeweled headlamp treatments and new taillamps. It will share showrooms with the lincoln navigator, town car and continental.  underneath the car is a completely new frame that allowed the grand marquis to earn a five-star rating for crash standards front and rear. While the center of the frame is quite similar to the old car's, the front and rear extensions have been upgraded and strengthened, and the front and rear suspensions have been improved for a smoother, more vibration-free ride. The traditional recirculating ball steering system has been upgraded with premium bearings and materials to improve steering feel and response; a power steering fluid cooler has been made standard.  the grand marquis is still a big car, with a base curb weight over 3900 pounds, a 114-inch wheelbase and an overall length of 212 inches. So no matter how good the steering and the tires and suspension are, it still takes some skill and effort to negotiate a supermarket parking lot.  the 1998 package includes upgrades to suspension, steering, tires and wheels, brakes, battery, security, interior, powertrain, and styling, in short, just about every area of the car. interiorthe list of standard equipment on a grand marquis rivals that of its sibling, the lincoln town car. There are still two flavors, the gs and the ls. Dual-exhaust is restricted to the ls version, which also comes with more standard equipment: floor mats, cruise control, power door locks, illuminated keyless entry system, chrome wheel covers, a light group, and a bodyside tape stripe.  ford's old preferred equipment packages, or peps, are gone, replaced with three simplified option groups: premium, ultimate, and performance. The $1000 premium package adds alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, electronic climate control, a power passenger seat and an auto-dimming mirror with compass. To that, the $2400 ultimate package adds: anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic instrumentation, and a premium sound system. The $855 handling package, which we recommend, includes a completely retuned suspension with rear air shocks, a big rear stabilizer bar, a 3. 27:1 axle ratio, the dual-exhaust engine, 16-inch alloy wheels and goodyear high-performance tires. The seats are huge, thick and comfortable as the family rocker. Nothing seems out of place and nothing about the entire interior is cramped. For 95th percentile drivers like me (6'3'' and 215 pounds), there is enough room for long legs, broad shoulders and gangly arms, but there is also enough latitude in seat adjustment to accommodate more petite family members. Rear seat roominess and comfort are at the top of the class, and trunk capacity is rated at almost 21 cubic feet. Fit and finish inside the car are superb, and the materials chosen are excellent. driving impressionthe engine that powers the grand marquis is a 4. 6-liter single overhead-cam v8 that was introduced with these cars in 1990, and it has turned out to be one of the best engines ford motor company has ever built in terms of quality and durability. It, too, has been upgraded for 1997, and now makes 200 horsepower with single exhaust and 220 hp with the optional dual exhaust system, a 10-hp increase over previous calibrations. The engine now has coil-on-plug ignition which is simpler and more reliable.  likewise, the 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission designed to mate with the 4. 6-liter v8 has been shaped up and smoothed out for 1998, with 50 percent quicker, smoother, and more positive shifts, and no maintenance required for the life of the car. The system can be switched off with a switch hidden in the glovebox.  wheels have been increased from 15-inch to 16-inch. Steel wheels are standard, aluminum alloy wheels are optional. Special alloy wheels come with the handling package. Standard tires are p225/60r-16 all-season radials that ride better and bite better than the smaller tires used last year. Brakes, too, have been enlarged and upgraded, with larger, thicker rotors and dual-piston calipers on the front discs for better, longer brake performance.  for 1998, the grand marquis rear suspension has been altered substantially to get that quiet, smooth and unperturbed ride. The rear trailing arms, which used to point inward toward the driveshaft, have been reshaped and remounted between the frame and the rear axle assembly to provide control of the axle's up and down motions. At the same time, the rear axle assembly has been fitted with a watts linkage, a simple mechanical link between the center of the frame and the axle assembly that locates the axle laterally. Mercury's precision trac suspension system with coil springs and relocated shock absorbers controls the ride. With one set of bars for vertical motions and the watts link for lateral motions, the car is much less susceptible to wallow and is not as affected by crosswinds as it was before. That's a deal!. assembled inoakville, ontario. options as tested4. 6-liter v-8 engine, dual exhaust, abs, traction-lok axle, ls package, premium package (cast aluminum wheels, electronic air conditioning, power passenger seat, leather wrap wheel, auto-dim mirror with compass); ultimate package (abs, traction control, electronic instrument cluster, premium am/fm cassette sound system), power windows, power locks, remote keyless entry, rear defrost. model testedgrand marquis ls. 2006 mercury mariner review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New gas/electric hybrid joins the lineup. introductionthe mercury mariner, based on the ford escape, debuted as a 2005 model and was hailed for its responsive handling, smooth road manners and available v6 engine. It's easily and affordably upgraded with all-wheel drive (4wd) for stable traction in the snow and a powerful v6 for more responsive performance. The 2006 mariner hybrid, with the same gasoline/electric powertrain that was first offered in the 2005 ford escape hybrid, comes only with all-wheel-drive and a continuously variable transmission (cvt).  the 2006 mercury mariner continues unchanged on the outside, its slick and clean design accented by mercury's avant-garde styling cues. Inside is a pleasant and calming cabin with room enough for the kind of stuff people who are moving up from the milan sedan or retreating from the more truck-like mountaineer need to haul around.  as part of a carefully scripted, and enormously expensive, re-birth and rejuvenation of the mercury brand, the mariner is intended to offer a step up in status over the ford escape.  compact sport utility vehicles are popular because they're smaller and easier to park than midsize suvs like the ford explorer. Yet they offer cargo space with fold-down back seats and a commanding view of the road that comes with a higher seating position.  the mercury mariner is a good example. It's a nice package. The size and basics are right. Three trim levels are available:  convenience 21,380) features comforts expected in prestige brand vehicles. Seats are upholstered in cloth and the front seats are manually adjustable. Options include privacy glass 275), a full-size spare wheel 105), side step bars 350) and a rear cargo convenience package 150).  luxury 23,285) comes with the more powerful, 200-horsepower v6 and privacy glass, and it's available with all-wheel drive 25,035). It comes standard with a six-way power driver's seat. Options include a power moonroof 585), the safety package 595), the audiophile sound system with a six-disc in-dash cd player and seven speakers 595), and the hybrid energy/audiophile/navigation system 1,995).  safety features that come standard on gasoline-powered mariners include dual two-stage frontal airbags; antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist; and lower anchors and tethers for children (latch). Granted, the mariner's headlights are more rectangular, and the fog lamp nacelles are more parallelogram than up-tipped eyebrow, but otherwise, and other than size, there's little visually to distinguish between the larger and smaller mercury suvs.  the trademark satin-finish aluminum vertical-bar grille sits on a matching bumper inset, turn indicator lights are housed where the headlamp lenses wrap around the fenders and the central recess in the hood imbues the front fenders with a subtle shoulder look.  borrowing from european custom, small turn-indicator repeater lights are positioned in the front quarter panels just aft of and slightly above the front wheel wells. Understated cladding preserves and protects the lower door panels and ties together the minimalist front and rear fender flares, nicely finishing the mid-door, horizontal character line optically connecting the front and rear bumpers. The tall glasshouse is properly proportioned to balance the body side panels. The angled c-pillar behind the rear side door accentuates the people-orientation of the mariner while acknowledging it can haul cargo, too.  from the rear, the mariner is, well, a sport utility vehicle. There's not much that can be done to stylize a liftgate, taillamps and bumper, other than with trim bits and pieces, and the mariner's designers did their best with what they had. Tasteful, satin-finish, grille-like accents brace the taillamps. The side character line continues across the liftgate, swelling in the center to form a surround for the license plate recess. Yet another satin-finish inset separates the step-top of the rear bumper and the body-color lower fascia. Bright chrome exhaust tips finish the package.  the mariner hybrid is distinguished by a small vent in the driver's side c-pillar, which channels cooling air to the battery pack, hybrid badging on the liftgate, front doors and acoustic engine cover, and unique 16-inch five-spoke wheels. interiorto a large extent, what holds for the mercury mariner's exterior holds for its interior. From the instrument bezels to the center stack's vertical braces to the shift lever cap to the center console to the logo in the steering wheel hub to the flat surfaces on the door armrests, satin-finish trims and highlights. About the only interior metal surfaces that aren't satin-finish are the chrome inside door handles and accent ringing the shift lever in the center console. The theme is successful and the overall look is one of polish and refinement, helped by wood-grain trim on the center stack and console.  the hybrid's interior feels a bit more upscale due to its leather trim and two-tone seating and door trim. The instrument panel is slightly different and includes a battery indicator dial, informing the driver which way the current in the electric system is flowing: to the battery during regenerative braking or from the battery to the electric motor when it's operating in assistance of the gasoline engine. Power window buttons, however, are of the old-school type, i. E., non-child/curious pet-proof. The stereo, too, shouts standard ford gear; as functional and easy-to-use as its controls are, they don't quite make premium gr.
