The all-new 2005 chrysler 300 is the first big rear-wheel-drive sedan to come out of chrysler in many years. It replaces the front-wheel-drive lh line, which chrysler has used for years. Back then, there were engineering cases for front-wheel drive, including reduced manufacturing costs and more compact packaging. But new technology has made rear-wheel drive preferable again. Traction control, electronic stability programs, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake distribution all improve the driver's ability to control the car. And one thing hasn't changed: rear-wheel drive is much better than front-wheel drive for managing horsepower. The 300c, which comes with a 340-horsepower hemi v8, is too powerful for front-wheel drive. the 300 might be a case of back to the future, but there's little that's retro about it, except maybe the giant grille, with a shape like the 1958 300c. There have been some successful chrysler 300s along the way, but nothing to match the impact of the '55. one of the advantages of front-wheel drive is traction in snow, but that too has been erased over the years. All-wheel drive will be available for drivers who want more traction. the chrysler 300's styling is distinctive, and its interior is roomy, efficient and stylish. The instrument panel and switchgear are easy to read and operate. Pieces of mercedes-benz are slipping into chrysler cars nowadays, and the 300c features a mercedes-like steering wheel, leather under an arc of wood at the top. while the 5. 7-liter hemi grabs the headlines, there are 2. 7- and 3. 5-liter v6 engines available. A standard chrysler 300 with a 2. 7-liter v6 can be had for the eye-popping low price of $23,595 including destination. It's a large, modern, stylish, comfortable car for a small price. The 340-horsepower hemi has to carry 4046 pounds, so it won't run with a corvette, but it is plenty fast, with a 0-60 time of 6. 3 seconds, according to chrysler. At the same time, the ride is smooth, solid and comfortable and the cabin is very quiet. The well in the cargo floor, holding the spare tire, is built at an angle, so if the 300 is crashed into from the rear, the tire will rotate upward allowing the frame structure to deform as designed. driving impressionthe 300c feels as solid as it looks, having inherited significant mechanicals from its parent company, mercedes-benz. From a handling standpoint, the 300 is heavily and positively influenced by a design borrowed from the mercedes e-class: five-link rear suspension mounted to a subframe, and the short-arm/long-arm front suspension, modified for the 300's longer wheelbase, wider track and bigger wheels. the ride in the 300c is very smooth and solid without any weakness that we could find in a half day of hard driving, and we wouldn't change a thing. The 120-inch wheelbase is longer even than that in the chrysler 300s from the 1950s, but the overall length is not. Nor is it longer than the front-wheel-drive 04 chrysler it replaces. Result: great ride, reasonable parking. and the cornering is good enough that higher-performance tires should be made available. The 300c comes with continental all-season tires, p225/60r18, but they squeal early and don't do justice to the chassis. Chrysler engineers have gotten the rack-and-pinion steering right; it's just the right amount of weighty, and provides a secure feeling. Major revisions make previous five hundred vastly superior. introductionford had little success with its large, front-drive family sedan called the ford five hundred since its introduction two years ago. So, for 2008, ford dumped the five hundred name and went back to the name of a clear market winner, renaming this car the 2008 ford taurus. likewise, the mercury montego has been renamed mercury sable, and the ford freestyle has been renamed taurus x, the x for crossover suv. along the way, ford has made some 500 changes to the new taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the five hundred. The general body shape of the new taurus is the same as that of the previous five hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better. this family of vehicles, loosely based on the same architecture as the volvo s80 luxury sedans with some detail changes to the suspension systems, also uses the same swedish haldex all-wheel-drive system as the volvo when it is ordered as an option. the weak 3. 0-liter v6 engine has been dropped in favor of a new 3. 5-liter, 24-valve v6 engine that makes a full 30 percent more power. It's the same engine that powers the larger and heavier ford edge and lincoln mkx crossovers and mkz luxury cars. Likewise, the cvt transmission has been replaced by a new 6f six-speed automatic. this new powertrain makes the taurus a whole lot more fun to drive than the ill-conceived five hundred was. Its 0-60 mph acceleration performance has been reduced by more than a second and a half, from 9. 2 seconds down to 7. 6 seconds, which is a huge chunk of performance. The new engine not only makes more power, it gets 10 percent better fuel economy, even after adjusting for the new, stricter testing procedures epa has mandated for 2008 models. On the open road, we found the taurus to be very quiet and smooth. taurus competes directly against other larger sedans on the market, chief among them the toyota avalon, the chevrolet impala, and the chrysler 300. The big kicker in all of this is that, with all the new styling, interior, engine, transmission and standard features upgrades, the price hovers only about $250 above comparably equipped versions of last year's bland, slow five hundred. lineupthe 2008 ford taurus features two models, sel 23,245) and limited 26,845). Each is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, called sel awd 25,095) and limited awd 28,695). Electronic stability control is an option. Sync features include the ability to have text messages read aloud, voice recognition for control of both phone and music functions, and phonebook transfer. The system is upgradeable for future players and for additional functionality down the road. Sync will be offered on taurus and 11 other 2008 ford, lincoln, and mercury vehicles later this year. a taurus limited awd we drove was loaded with options, including advancetrac electronic stability control, a roof-mounted rear-seat dvd entertainment system, heated front seats, convenience package, wood package, power adjustable pedals, a moonroof, voice-activated touch-screen navigation, sirius satellite radio, and reverse sensing system, bringing the bottom line to $33,600, and making it the best-equipped taurus possible, short of the 18-inch chromed aluminum wheel option. driving impressionthe new engine and transmission in the 2008 ford taurus are a wonderful team. The engine is extremely quiet and smooth at idle, and uses a pendulum mounting system that effectively separates its motions and vibrations from the rest of the car. It sounds healthy, powerful and smooth at full throttle, makes the car plenty quick in acceleration and passing situations, and settles down to a nice background hum in sixth gear, as it should. At freeway speeds, the taurus is very, very quiet inside. we spent in inordinate amount of time at full-throttle with the new taurus because it's so much fun to wind up in the lower gears; the old five hundred was just slow. The steering is accurate, with good feedback, and not overly assisted in normal and highway driving. It just happens to look and behave like a family sedan. That was back in march 2000, and chrysler has been selling more than 135,000 of them a year. In spite of this, the pt cruiser still attracts attention. People are intrigued by the cruiser's difficult-to-define character. Chrysler says the pt cruiser is too cool to categorize. It boasts the interior volume of a sport-utility vehicle. Pull the rear seats out and it'll haul a load of building materials or a big tv box. Yet it's shorter in length than many compact cars, making it easy to park. It's also easy on gas. adding to the fun is the driving experience. The cruiser is based on the dodge neon, a compact car noted for sprightly performance. New turbo models add fire under the hood. The gt (aka pt turbo) features a 220-horsepower engine that gives the cruiser a real boost. We also like affordability. On the downside, the pt cruiser has all the refinement of a compact car. new features are available for the 2004 models to enhance the cruiser's sophistication. An optional power convenience group 705) adds remote keyless entry, automatic power central locking, and power exterior mirrors, and cruise control. The gt also comes with side-impact airbags and most of the limited edition's luxury goodies. A new option for 2004 is sirius satellite radio, which is offered on all models. But that's not all there is to the pt cruiser. The shape is intriguing, but underneath is a modern platform with front-wheel drive. by exterior dimensions, the pt cruiser is quite compact. It's nearly 6 inches shorter than a neon subcompact. Yet with 63 inches from pavement to the highest point of its roof, the cruiser is also 7 inches taller than the neon, and nearly as tall as some minivans. That height is a crucial element of the pt cruiser's design. the gt is distinguished from the other models by its chrome exhaust tips, larger grille and air intakes, and a spoiler on its liftgate; however, the spoiler 150) is an option on the other models. interiorthe pt cruiser pulls its exterior styling themes into the cabin with painted inserts on its t-shaped symmetrical dashboard. The driver faces three white-faced gauges set in individual cylinders, with speedometer center, tachometer right and fuel and water temperature left. The gt's silver-faced speedometer reads up to 140 mph, while the standard cruiser's speedo goes to 110. accessory switches are concentrated in the center panel, with radial-type climate control dials. The door levers have a nice action, and the switches operate with good tactile feel, though they're not world class. The stereo sounds tinny. Also, there's a separate set button for the station presets, fussier than simply holding the preset down. a bonus of the cruiser's tall profile is its upright seating position, with a fairly high view ahead, somewhat like a sport-utility vehicle or minivan. The front seats in the three lower-line models have a reasonable amount of bolstering to keep driver and passenger from sliding side to side. The gt also features a chrome-spoked, leather wrapped steering wheel, and chrome pedals. roominess is a virtue in the cruiser. Its 121. 5 cubic feet of interior volume is comparable to that of large cars such as the mercedes-benz s-class or lincoln town car. Much of that space is a function of the cruiser's height. The roof rises toward the rear like on a chopped-top hot rod. to take advantage of this, the rear seat bottoms are higher than those in front, resulting in what what the industry calls theater seating. The front seats are mounted on tall boxes, leaving plenty of room for rear passengers to stretch their legs underneath. A six-foot, nine-inch passenger can fit comfortably in the front or rear seats. chrysler claims the pt cruiser's cabin can be configured 26 different ways. This flexibility stems from three features: a 65/35 split rear bench that can be folded flat, tumbled forward or removed; a movable parcel shelf; and an available front passenger seat that folds flat. The rear seats are anchored with quick-release attachments for easy removal. Suitcase handles and steel wheels make it easier to stash them in the garage and move them about. The smaller seat weighs 35 pounds, but the larger section weighs a hefty 65 pounds. The cruiser can provide up to 64 cubic feet of cargo volume. Still, a mountain bike doesn't really fit without removing the front wheel, removing the rear seats, or both. Seatbelts should always be worn, however, and the pt cruiser comes with three-point safety harnesses at all positions, including the rear center position.
